The southern of Morocco

he southern of Morocco is a real cultural and linguistic medley. A real feast for the eyes and the spirit, each tribe, each village and each valley possesses its own identity, known through its music, its ethnic group diversity, its architectural specificities and its costumes and customs.

The Jews cohabited with the Blacks, the Amazigh as well as the other ethnic groups such us the Arabs and the Chorafas of Sijlmassa ever since its foundation under the aegis of the Meknasa Tribe during the second half of the 8th century of the Cherifian era.

According to certain sources, the Jews entered Sijlmasa after the year of 70 Ac. That is to say after the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus. According to that sources, the Jewish groups had gathered in great numbers in the East of the Ziz Valley long ago, and that they were the richest of the region in the second century BC.

Sijilmassa valley was a region where the Jews had settled since the ancient times.There were two groups. One of them is known under the name of Tafilalt. These two Jewish groups continued their commercial and artisan activities in the regions of SIjlimassa after its destruction.

It' is said that a great number of Jews lived in Ksar Tabouaasamt and practicied industry and commerce. The same activities were held elsewhere mainly in Ksar El Mamoun that sheltered several people particularly the Jewish traders.

Jews also have played a dynamic role in the relationship between Sijlimassa and Europe during the Mernide Eraby leaning on their relations with the Jews of Tlemcen, Mayorque and Barcelona... And they kept the same role during the periods that followed.

During the French protectorate in Morocco in 1912, the Jews scattered in the national territory mainly in the regions of Ziz and in the oasis of Tafilalt. The Valley of Ziz, Gheris and Guir sheltered important groups of Jews at the river banks of the valleys mentioned above and their countryside and Ksars.
